What does it mean to be board certified?

For a provider to be board certified, 4 years are spent in medical school followed by at least 3 years in a specialty residency. Renewed certification follows through education and assessments. Aside for recertification, the initial certification process involves 11-15 years, depending on the specialty.

What is an MD?

A Medical Doctor (MD) has gone on after an initial college degree to attain another 4 years of medical training, as well as an residency that involves 8,000-14,000+ hours.

What is the specialty of Internal Medicine?

​

Internal medicine is the study and practice of adult medical care. Included in the specialty are competencies for primary and preventative care, chronic diseases, acute diseases, hospital medicine. In addition, practitioners receive detailed study in multiple organ systems including cardiology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, nephrology, endocrinology, hematology/oncology, infectious disease, rheumatology, and neurology

What is the combined specialty of internal medicine and pediatrics?

The combination of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics is referred to as Med-Peds. Med-Peds physicians are trained to manage routine primary care as well as complicated medical conditions in both children and adults. They're particularly well suited to patients with chronic or complex diseases that begin during childhood and continue into adulthood. Med-Peds practitioners complete their 4 year residency having had 10,000-16,000 hours of clinical experience.
